"...the concern with poverty works like an anesthetic to the bad conscience of the many."
The only way out is to state one may be concerned only w/ one's income and that society does not exist in which case, the concerns with both poverty and inequality become irrelevant.
No other way out.

Comparative economics is an incredibly important subject that opens up a whole new world in understanding the macroeconomic and public policies dynamics as well as varying dimensions of complex social-cultural structures.

NEW - just published a chapter by Dmitry Pozhidaev in the @oxunipress.bsky.social Handbook of Post-Socialist Economies (that I'm editing)! The chapter covers #economic #history of the #Soviet Union 1917-1953 -- an incredibly interesting & informed analytical piece!

Several people have asked me for my recent syllabus. Here it is.

The title of this class is "From Pareto to the Kuznets waves", but it does cover (in one session), classical writers too.

“Publish or vanish” indeed - been receiving a lot of clearly AI generated papers for review past few months … preserving even ChatGPT formats (bold font subtitles etc) 🤷‍♂️
I just finished a three-year term as an editor at an international relations journal. I began at the start of the LLM era but ended right in the middle of it. Our volume of submissions tripled and our desk reject rate rose to 75%. I have some thoughts.

The story of Italy is emblematic of western Europe. In 1952 when the modern GDP data begin, Italy's real GDP per capita was slightly less than twice the world average. It passed the 2 landmark in 1956. It continued its upward trajectory of the Trente Glorieuses.

Earlier this am (like 5am) catching @Amtrak to #ASSA2026. Lots of graduate students on the train + in the conf this year (not as many exhibitors as six years ago but). Is the annual grand meeting of economists @assameeting.bsky.social bouncing back?

So, how accurately does the Economic Complexity Index capture the “economic complexity”?

Most recent evidence from very small #TransitionEconomies suggests that final goods production matters more than just exports…

See you at the #ASSA2026

New Substack! With transient economic successes, it is important to talk "industrial policy" or strategic macroeconomic development now in the very small open post-socialist economies.
