Some people use the extreme discounts to buy things they otherwise couldn’t afford, but unfortunately this is not the norm. Brands prepare months in advance to create amazing, unique offers that feel too good to pass up and that drive unparalleled consumption. Yet these items have a short lifespan, and when it’s time to throw them away, they don’t simply disappear…This year we travelled to Accra, the capital of Ghana, to tell you the story of where the clothes you throw away end up.Accra is home to the largest second hand clothing market in the world: Kantamanto. Kantamanto is a vast complex of thousands of stalls where around 30000 people try to resell discarded clothes that arrive every week. Unfortunately far more clothes arrive than the market can possibly give a second life to.We had the opportunity to attend a beach clean up alongside @theorispresent, a foundation actively working to raise awareness of the situation in Accra and to encourage fashion brands to share their production volumes to understand whether unnecessary waste is being created through overproduction.
