Should scientists apply to OpenAI's fund for research on AI & mental health? Should policymakers consider it a credible safety effort?

Avriel Epps & I see it as "grantwashing," and it's an insult to anyone whose loved one's death involved chatbots. We explain:

J. Nathan Matias and Avriel Epps say OpenAI's announced research funding is the perfect corporate action to make sure we don't find answers for years.

Why do the promises of technology ring not just hollow, but hostile? We look at the political economy of tech and hype, and argue that the powers that be literally can't distinguish between the good and the awful. 👇
Don’t Believe the Hype — or Doom — About AI
For America’s VC-dominated tech industry, AI hype isn’t just a crazy by-product — it’s a structural part of the US economy in which capital tries to write our destinies. We shouldn’t let it.

Dear @parismarx.com
appreciate your work a bunch, but I am taken aback hearing you do ads for Hello Fresh. They are deluded, they feed on hyperindividualism & isolation, they send out packages for a single dish which is complete madness, its use – while maybe fun – is nothing less than degrading.

„It’s hard to demand an explanation from someone in power if they don’t have it and couldn’t get it even if they wanted to give it to you. For that reason, opaque AI decision systems are highly attractive tools for those in power; they offer a virtually bulletproof accountability shield.“ – S.Vallor
