Poignant words by @chrislintott.bsky.social (starting at 7:33 min) about why UK funding of astronomy is an investment that has been returning more that the UK spends & why these huge funding cuts to physics & astronomy with STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council) will be devastating 🔭🧪
Listeners to Radio 4’s Inside Science today get an essay from me in defence of astronomy as pure research. Please listen in and let me know what you think.

Basically as we know : STFC is also funding a bunch of facilities (many which are not even STFC remit!) and those costs have gone up (a lot). So to balance the books, they have to cut (sorry I mean reduce costs) grants to scientists.
Many scientists contacted the SITC concerned about UKRI cuts, especially to large Physics projects. Sir Ian said the overall budget was not being reduced but rising costs created a funding gap driving the reductions announced. He admitted a communications failure.

💥💥 Double detonation!

For the first time, astronomers have obtained visual evidence that a star met its end by detonating twice.

The fingerprint that points to this mechanism is represented by two separate shells of calcium.
