कई वर्षों तक माचू पिच्चू को इंका सभ्यता के खोए हुए शहर के रूप में जाना जाता था, लेकिन वैज्ञानिक हिरम बिंघम के पत्रों ने यह स्पष्ट किया कि यह स्थान स्थानीय निवासियों को पहले से ही ज्ञात था और वहां जाने का रास्ता भी आसानी से सुलभ था। बिंघम जिस "खोए हुए शहर" की बात अक्सर करते थे, वह वास्तव में क्या था और क्या उन्होंने उसे माचू पिच्चू में पाया, यह अब शायद ही कोई जान पाए।
