Redlining, roadways & highways weren’t the only barriers for Black Americans—sometimes it was the street names themselves. In certain Southern communities, streets have 2 names depending on the demographic. Historians note this was a strategy for separation.

Plecker’s policies led to the adoption of the “one-drop rule;” a classification system where a person w/any African ancestry made them Black (“one drop of Black blood”), effectively reinforcing hierarchies & discriminating against Black, Indigenous & mixed-race people.
