Charlie Sporck writes in his memoirs about a 1981-82 meeting between the Americans and Japanese semi folks. During the meeting, one Japanese executive called US firms "boutique", leading the legendary Bob Noyce to shout back and forth with an NEC exec about Japanese subsidies for semiconductors.
