Decisions made by health insurance companies aren’t necessarily final. The ACA established clear appeal rights, allowing people to challenge denials and seek an independent review if they believe their claims are not being handled correctly.

Health plans can work very differently depending on the network rules they use. HMOs are often chosen for their lower premiums and predictable costs, but they work best for people who are comfortable staying within a defined provider network.

Universal coverage systems make sure that everyone has access to coverage, but do not necessarily eliminate the availability to obtain private insurance. In countries like Australia, people can use both, ensuring essential care is covered while still allowing extra options.

Many of the challenges health care providers and patients face in the U.S. stem from workforce shortages and misallocation of resources. Universal coverage systems address this by investing in the clinicians and teams necessary to meet the needs of communities.
