I hereby apologize for thinking anyone was weird when I saw them with a dog in a stroller or wagon. One of the corgis I walk is old, has arthritis in her paws, and she's losing strength in her hind legs, but she still loves to get out of the house.

I finally got around to updating my bog! Go to sciencefornonscientistsblog.wordpress.com/2025/11/18/g... if you are interested in plastic waste in the ocean, how it gets there, and how it circulates.

I hate that I couldn’t hyperlink to the Kostigen paper, but since it showed up as a download the pathway was too long and the link broke. You can look it up by entering the information in reference…

Whistleroot just came onto the adoption floor at Cheyenne Animal Shelter today. Isn't he gorgeous? The fur says Australian shepherd, the tail says husky. He needs training and lots of exercise!
November 16, 2025 at 1:49 AM
Ruby had been on a Day Out with a volunteer, but she was bouncing for another walk! The Cheyenne Animal Shelter staff have her listed as a black lab/wirehaired pointer mix. A hunting dog that never gets tired. Go figure.

Animal care staff at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter say that Debo is a puller, but 3 other volunteers had walked him before I did, so he was running out of gas.

Betty is a senior dog (8) at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter and has been patiently waiting for the past 2 weeks. She likes walking, but prefers to go at a slower pace.
November 16, 2025 at 1:42 AM
Bit has been on the adoption floor at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter for about 2 weeks. She looks kind of like an everydog, but she is so gentle and doesn't pull at all!

Is anyone else seeing this trend of first round interviews being conducted by AI? It seems the State of Wyoming has decided that all potential state job candidates should do this, whether it's for DEQ, Agriculture, or WY Game and Fish. I hate it.

Leia hasn't been at the shelter very long. She knows how to sit and takes treats gently. Now we're going to have to work on her staying in a sitting position for longer than 2 seconds!
October 25, 2025 at 11:35 PM
Charlee is reactive, so the shelter staff prefer volunteers not handle her. I had to show her off because every time I asked her to sit and offered her a treat, she sat and took the treat gently. Dogs generally don't do that unless they already know the cue.

Anya is deaf, so she is a little nervous at first, but when I showed her the leash, she sat down right in front of me with a look that plainly said, "So are we walking or what?" She hasn't been at the shelter long, and I bet she'll get snapped up in another couple days.

Meet Walnut! She's been at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter for almost 2 weeks. No idea why. Just look at that face!

I finally updated my blog again! I felt like my last post didn't go into the how of plastic recycling enough, so I took a deeper dive into mechanical recycling. Go to sciencefornonscientistsblog.wordpress.com/2025/10/21/m... if you're interested. @ssteingraber1.bsky.social
Materials and Methods
If your town is anything like mine, it collects recyclables as a multi-waste stream because this has been proven to increase the rate of recycling (Sambyal et. al, 2024, p. 2465). The obvious probl…

Well, that's finally over. Tell me you think you're owed money without actually saying you think you're owed money. When pretty much everyone in a Republican state thinks you're an asshole, it might be time to reevaluate things.

Real time data coming out of the world’s climate measurement systems should be stopping us in our tracks. The latest estimate shows that, this week, the Earth is 1.9°C warmer than before we began burning fossil fuels.

Roscoe is a lot smaller than he looks in his pictures--about 50 pounds. He quickly became my favorite dog of the day. Once he realized he could get a treat just by sitting, he stuck close and sat a lot. He can be strong, but was mostly interested in smells and treats. Meet him at CAS!

Ford came to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter with skin allergies. He's getting better, but not quite there yet. He's a massively strong puller when he sees something interesting (like the dogs in the dog park), but once we turned the corner he settled down to sniff.
September 28, 2025 at 1:02 AM
Sir Roscoe P. Coltrane (seriously, that's his name) has been at CAS since Monday (9/22). He's 8 years old, but that doesn't stop him from enjoying outside time to walk and sniff. He also loves butt scratches!
September 28, 2025 at 12:59 AM
Stormie has been at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter since Monday (9/22). She jumped up to lick my face (it's the husky in her), but she was so easy to walk on leash. No pulling whatsoever.
September 28, 2025 at 12:56 AM
Meet Trixie! She is highly treat-motivated and easy to walk on leash. She went on the adoption floor at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter this morning, but I doubt she'll be there for long.
