Composed in 1917, Tintagel is a tone poem inspired by the legends of King Arthur and the dramatic landscapes of Cornwall. Bax even drew on the orchestration of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, also sharing a Cornish setting. Can you hear the rugged coastline and mythic atmosphere? 〓〓 🌊

Did you know? Sir Arnold Bax once wrote under the alias Dermot O'Byrne to publish literary works inspired by Irish mythology and nationalism — a deep interest that influenced the Celtic atmosphere of many of his orchestral works. 🇮🇪

The work ends with a radiant Epilogue - solo oboe over an oscillating 3-chord string motif. Vaughan Williams later quoted the theme in the 2nd movt of his Concerto for Two Pianos (1946). @vwfndn.bsky.social @arnoldbaxsociety.bsky.social
