I was told long ago before I left Bluesky for a good while —it was probably here as well— that Mulino "didn't sound quite pro-Trump" because "he was defending Panama from Trump".

Here he is yesterday claiming Trump finds Panama "cooperative" and discussing likely non-nuanced support for Israel too.

What I'm not liking about people in the US feeling "worried" (sorry for my skepticism) about Panama after the attack against Iran is that Panama is very much not doing ok right now so we probably could use some support *now*; not after some hypothetical missile hit.

So my prez (AKA the dude who caved in with Trump, let him bring troops to Panama & will prolly grant him first and free transit through the Canal) cut off internet & phone service in a whole province (Bocas, if you have ever heard about it from expats) & also got Starllink to kick us out nationwide.

The US officially betrayed Ukraine.

Marco Rubio's latest announcement confirms it.

The US dollar is the death of nations. And NATO should reestructure itself from scratch, if it even continues to exist. There's not "Atlantic" to talk about. Europe is on its own.

Panama's very right-leaning. I don't even know why progressive Americans, Canadians & Euros move here. Rampant queerphobia, religious zeal in public policy, anti-union sentiment among working class... But I guess having public transportation & subsidized public college earned us the label of commies

Wow, the Peter Navarro/Ron Vara thing is incredibly stupid. No way we have been soft invaded in Panama by a bunch of inept clowns running a world power to the ground.

The MAGA-servile Panamanian government and the US released a "joint statement" celebrating increased American military presence in Panama moving forward.

The problem?

Whereas Panama's official statement in Spanish reinforces Panama's sovereignty over the Panama Canal, the American text doesn't.

Canadians and Greenlanders should forever feel proud of having actual countries and not submitting to the United States. Today, President Mulino & all of the Panamanian government BOWED DOWN to Pete Hegseth, his demands to militarize the Canal and Trump's final goal of annexing the former Canal Zone

What sucks about being powerlessly living in Panama right now:

World: "We need to diversify our trade. We can't trust the US anymore"
My president: "No, the Belt & Road is a fantasy. I am the president and I decided to get us out of it. No, I haven't spoken with Europe either"

Yet more reasons to not trust President Mulino actually defending Panama and its Canal from Trump's claims

President Mulino held a meeting this week with U.S. representatives, citing the event to the media as "bipartisan". It isn't really that simple.

Canada is and will remain a sovereign state and it is up to Canadians themselves only to stay or leave the Commonwealth and to ever consider joining the United States.

And given reactions over there, I'm sure joining the US voluntarily is quite off the table.
INGRAHAM: You're tougher with Canada than you are with our biggest adversaries. Why?

TRUMP: Only because it's meant to be our 51st state. One of the nastiest countries to deal with is Canada.

So he isn't just annexing Cristóbal and Ancón from Panama, but also preparing himself to bring back the Gold Roll/Silver Roll policy, too!

*Yes*, the Canal was built on racial segregation! Little detail rarely mentioned on all those discussions these days.

In order to garner enough support to ratify the U.S. constitution, translations of it had to be printed in Dutch for New Yorkers and in German for Pennsylvanians, because those states had such large populations of non–English-speaking peoples.

Miss me with the "Reagan over Trump" thing. Reagan intended for the Canal Zone US enclave to remain in place forever. Trump would be reivindicating him if the restores it back into existance. What we🇵🇦 negotiated with Carter, hard to say other presidents would have willed to; especially Republicans.

Panama is cheap when you're not Panamanian. The new pension reform is written as if we earned the way expats earned throughout their lives *at least*, which of course is limited money in, say, the US, but here it goes a long way.
March 15, 2025 at 3:01 AM
There's a faction of Zonians and US expats in Panama —most likely, many Republicans, but I wouldn't discard the possibility of some Democrats— who not only support the restoration of US bases in Panama or even restoring the Zone forcibly (i.e. conquest now; not a land lease). Why, though? Rationally

"options for increasing troop presence" is an interesting euphemism for "invading Panama"
EXCLUSIVE: The Trump White House has directed the U.S. military to draw up options for increasing the American troop presence in Panama to achieve President Trump’s goal of “reclaiming” the Panama Canal, officials say.
Trump White House has asked U.S. military to develop options for the Panama Canal, officials say
Potential plans range from partnering more closely with the Panamanian military to a less likely option of U.S. troops seizing the canal by force, U.S. officials told NBC News

So Americans... How is the "Panama Canal is just a distraction" theory/discourse going? Because this surely looks as US militarization of Panamanian civilian zones. And it doesn't look like the Panamanian government is against either.

Honestly, I don't take anything against Panama's treatment of migrants personally. I don't support my government's actions, so I don't get behind these either. Our President still believes the US is some "key ally" that is just "a bit confused" and not an hostile power willing to invade and kill.
March 9, 2025 at 7:56 PM
"The Panama Canal" is not a person, but we Panamanians are.

"The Canal Zone" doesn't exist since 1999, but the people of Ancón, Cristóbal and Veracruz do.

The US won't "take the Panama Canal". It will annex parts of Panama —without Panamanians.

I hope this paper helps the discussion surrounding the Panama Canal and its development model. And I also hope it helps to illustrate the neocolonial condition Panama has been subject to during the past century.

Thanks to the team at @phenomenalworld.bsky.social for trusting us with this article.
