Why are Haloarchaea so colorful? Their pictorial hues come from carotenoid pigments like bacterioruberin & beta-carotene. These not only create stunning pink & orange tones but also protect the cells from UV & oxidative stress. Likewise, they hold exciting biotech potential! #ARCTECH #Microbiology

The S-layer is a crystalline protein coat found at the cell envelope of most #archaea, forming a hexagonal symmetry resulting in geometric pores. These self-assembling structures have exciting potential for #nanotechnology! The stunning images were provided by the Daum lab. #ARCTECH #microbiology
