Software engineer for way too long. It depends
It's freaking me out that DevOps is nothing but re-enforced silos these days. The complete opposite of what the term was supposed to mean

what’s the name for a version-and-dependency-and-more manager like `uv`? I don’t know, but I’m building one for Ruby anyway

rv, a new kind of Ruby management tool
For the last ten years or so of working on Bundler, I’ve had a wish rattling around: I want a better dependency manager. It doesn’t just manage your gems, it manages your ruby versions, too. It doesn’...

Hey friends! I did a TEDx talk and it's now up on the TED Conferences YouTube. It's possibly the best and most important talk I've ever done.

I would ask that you watch it, and please SHARE it broadly and widely. Thank you! youtu.be/dVG8W-0p6vg #AI #Tech #TED

babelfish, universal translators etc. are things that are now past conceivable. They are past achievable. They have been achieved to a degree. And yet, terrifying is the thought of whatever (A)Intelligence is performing the feat having hallucinations and we never realizing it

re: generative AI

I have finally fully and accurately explained my problem with how it’s marketed and used.

And now, you can use it, too.

The disonance between the "you are not smart enough" arrogance of the tech bros and their insistence that the AI trained in all of the output of said not smart ones somehow will provide solutions to all our problems.
Garbage in -> something, something AI -> useful out is _not_ how it works people.

The world is spiraling and I can't help but quote @cstross.bsky.social in my head: "with the right, it is always projection".
My very own "told ya" for everything from "protect children from perverts" to "no more wars, except this latest one against the ones that are planning our destruction".

Every tech-bro is all up on prompt engineering and how juniors can be easily replaced by AI agents.
No juniors now means no seniors in 10 years.
On the bright side, if everyone learns "prompt engineering", than it means that finally people learn to communicate clearly and accurately.

The rule is that books are better than their screen adaptations and there are only single digits exception to it that prove it.
Murderbot is not an exception.

Murderbot the book is way better than Murderbot the series.
Murderbot the series is a very good series, i.e. the book is brilliant.

On the list of things normal for in-the-80s-we-didn’t-have-adhd people, please add “write fully spelled, grammatically correct SMS and never sent it because you got distracted”.

I have been looking at this Lovecraftian horror today and my mind has been losing its grip on reality

Dir.glob('**/*.{xml}').grep(/^[\s\S]*\/src\/[\s\S]*\/res\/layout\//){ |resLayoutXmlFilePath| resLayoutXmlFilePath.split("\/").last() }

If you're concerned about AI taking over programming, check out this conversation between @scott.hanselman.com and @markrussinovich.bsky.social. It provides the best explanation I've ever heard about why that won't happen anytime soon—or even later. youtu.be/PjInF4wbmxM?...

Why is it that we are back at the "your programming language sucks and I am not interested in it" years?
I was so happy with the "I'm going to learn another half a dozen new languages and figure out how to improve" era.

The BepiColombo probe went past Mercury the other day...
And the photos are awe inspiring apnews.com/article/merc...

The probe flew by at around the distance the ISS is at (~300km), (ISS youtube find www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG6B...)

You get a lot more Mercury in the frame and a lot less colour

The internet is awash with the imminent arrival of AGI. Everyone is so excited!
o3 takes its time to think things through and it is actually burning enough electricity for a small village doing it.
Eerily analogous to the energy required to raise a human being to the same reasoning level.

This bluesky thing is like coming back after years of absence and stumbling upon long lost friends and acquaintances while strolling through the market, realizing you actually lost contact without wanting to, in all the noise and the mess of the old market that has now turned into a mall

Stumbled over a very elaborate piece of awk magic on a codebase I am currently redesigning and thought “well, if they can write this then they should have no trouble adapting to a bot of Ruby code doing the same”. Made a comment to this effect when discussing with the team

I've been having enormous fun retrofitting a rather chaotic codebase and while I have been doing it, I leaned on Github Copilot a bit more, just to see how much it can take.
Let's have a thread on my takeaways from this endeavor.

One of my favourite lines is "In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is".
A good way to kick off the post bird era methinks. Prepare for a sporadically updated series of Theory & Practice tweets
