Western North Carolina communities are still waiting on FEMA funding to rebuild after Helene. The FEMA Act would require FEMA to disburse this kind of funding within 3 months of a town submitting a request.

Martha and Basil Thomas met in 1975 and enjoyed 38 years of marriage together. Basil spent his career in the mines until he was injured on the job in the 1980s. Shortly after that, he was diagnosed with black lung disease.

Paddlers will soon return to the whitewater river of Western North Carolina for the world’s largest extreme kayaking event. After the destruction of Hurricane Helene sent the renowned Green Race on a yearlong hiatus, the paddling community is gearing up for the race’s 30th year on Nov. 1, which will look much different with the Green River’s course reshaped by the storm.
