🔎 Last week in Westminster Hall, MPs set out how financial secrecy in Britain’s Overseas Territories is something that hits communities hard across the UK. When oligarchs, tax dodgers and organised criminals hide their money offshore, it is working people here at home who pick up the bill 👇🧵

🚨 👍 🧵 1/ As our friends at the @ukanticorruptioncoalition.org say, the forthcoming #AutumnBudget could bring in more revenue if we provided more support for HMRC and our enforcement agencies.

We wrote about this in a major report earlier this year:

🔎 New analysis highlights how Georgia has become a key node in Russia’s sanctions-evasion network - turning Western restrictions into profit through re-exports, permissive regulation, and oligarchic capture 👇

💷 Economic crime costs us billions every year, from fraud to money laundering.

But law enforcement budgets haven’t kept pace.

Watch Lord Cromwell make the case for an Economic Crime Fighting Fund, which would give agencies the tools they need by reinvesting more of the cash taken from criminals 👇

We welcome today’s UK-US action disrupting a major online fraud network which was using corporate secrecy in the British Virgin Islands and UK property to stash its dirty money.

It’s a reminder that there is more we can do to crack down on economic crime 👇
Strong move from the new Foreign Secretary.

But it is shocking that fraudsters were able to hide behind shell companies in our own offshore territories, and then invest their ill-gotten gains in UK property.

It is time to drive dirty money out of our economy for good.

👏 We welcome the referral to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal of this case of alleged misconduct connected to the OneCoin fraud.

❌ Legal threats should never be allowed to silence those brave people who expose wrongdoing.

⚖ We need a universal anti-SLAPP law in the UK as soon as possible.
Just announced: the UK's most famous libel firm, Carter-Ruck, is being prosecuted before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal for recklessly enabling a $4bn fraud

It's astonishing how reckless Carter-Ruck was - likely causing $$$ more to be lost to fraudsters
