A record is a place I go January 13, 2026 A worn cardboard sleeve for "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart A few years ago I got a copy of “Year of the Cat” by Al Stewart on vinyl for $3 from Big Dig Records in Cambridge. I had decided to get into him and lucked out that afternoon. The whole thing (save one song, of course) was new to me, and it stayed on my turntable for a couple weeks that spring. It’s a great record, you should listen to it. I never listened to any of these songs over any streaming platform. I continued to revisit them once or twice a year. I heard them dozens of times, but only on this piece of vinyl. I just pulled it off my shelf for the first time in a bit, and when it plays it’s like I’m inhabiting all the other evenings I’ve listened to it. I’m not alone in thinking this feeling is unique to an association with a large object like this, something that takes up space on a shelf. But I’m still struck by it. Leave a ReplyCancel reply
