At the time, what is now the river IJ was a sea arm of the Zuiderzee (South Sea). In 1932 the Afsluitdijk (closing dike) was completed, closing the Zuiderzee off from the North Sea and turning it into lake IJsselmeer.

Until about the middle of the 19th century the water of the IJ (a diphthong pronounced somewhat like 'eye') reached up to this dike.

Got up long before daybreak. A relaxing, quiet morning, save for the birds singing and chirping amidst the plants on our balcony - and in the treetops (at eye height). A double espresso. Twice. Clearing aways last night's dishes while enjoying Radio Paradise's Mellow Mix.
