Service designer at Defra. Trying to think of something to write for my 258th social bio of the year … keep coming back to “old web fart”. Based firmly on the Leisure Peninsula.
What in the farm kind of pitch are they playing on?

Ok. Entering in to uncharted waters tomorrow. 91 days. It’s been a while. I can do this.

There’s definitely a law of diminishing returns thing … but our new internet is stupidly fast.

It’s been a while since there’s been a good, ol’ fashioned UI debate. It’s interesting to have been around long enough to see the trend carousel rotate a few times. This flavour of glass skeuomorphism (nice to bring that phrase out of the cupboard) seems particularly prone to being unreadable.

Is there a ‘Professional Moaner’ role on the DDaT framework? I hope it has skills like ‘Strategic ranting’.

My reaction to seeing Darwin stepping up. “Oh …”

I am not a fan of modern web development practices.

In other news … Old man shakes fist at clouds.

Adding “starred in a Jason Mamoa film” to my LinkedIn.

I’ve just had my first eye test in about 40(!) years.

I have ‘excellent’ long distance vision and just need the standard age thing of some reading help.

So, it turns out spending your entire life looking at a glowing screen does NOT give you square eyes or, indeed, ‘send you gozz eyed’.

One step forward, two back. Maybe not two. It’s better than that. There is some progress. 0.95 back? 0.9 at a push? Getting stuff done in Gov, innit.

I’m on the 7:08 train. One of the ultimate tests of your age and area of upbringing is knowing the only correct response to hearing ‘708’.

This is a great example of why government transformation is difficult and can’t be fixed by tech-bros on fly-by tours of duty.

You need to fix the legacy technology and underlying bureaucracy before building shiny apps (if that’s even what’s needed)

The new flood warning system is near it's beta phase. It's a tricky one to do.

Flooding doesn't happen to schedule, and sending out test warnings in real situations is not optimal.

The team are recruiting the next phase of testing and need as many people as possible to help.

I've just removed iTerm (the Terminal app) from my dock. Do I need to hand in my web designer card in anywhere? Who even am I any more?

Would really like to double down on smart people rather than smart tech.

1000th (recorded) Wordles. That’s something, right?

Spent most of the day in a meeting trying to find a way to fund and resource a relatively small, but innovative (in our world) embeddable tool.

How do I @ Kier?

I really don’t like this startup talk. Nearly all burn through cash and people before failing spectacularly. The ones that are ‘successful’ stop being startups and quickly become just another organisation with lots of technical and organisational debt.

What happened to hotel room biscuits? Has there been a meeting? Has Big Hotel got together and shook hands on a no-biscuit deal?

Why is Black Friday - which didn’t exist 10 years ago - now every single day of November from the second the last Roman candle fizzles out?

42, trending just under. I’ll take that for a US festival. Some UK bands coming clutch in the lower regions of the bill.
Your real age is 70 minus the number of musicians you recognize playing at Coachella 2025

Last night’s gig was good. I can’t remember the last time I went to something that feels small but very much on the way up. Three support acts felt a bit much. SheFu being the pick of the bunch, they were having a whale of a time. Bands are making me feel super old.

Second gig with my 15 year old daughter tonight. This one is totally her choice. A band called Welly that I know very little about. They’re in that talky, story driven Art Brut/Yard Act (who we saw a couple of weeks) ball park. Quite looking forward to it.

I can’t do that post-the-first-gif-for-your-name thing due to contractural reasons.

Ok, Man United related reasons.

And he can’t even spell it properly.

“There’s dead big flakes but it’s not sticking because it’s so wet.”

Today I learned that the word people use for snow building up is apparently one of those regional things. ‘Sticking’ is the right term. What do you wronguns say elsewhere?
