Dear Diary: musings on gardening and more, somewhere between 7a and 6b. Occasional low-stakes plant drama included. Show me yours 🌱
I am a dedicated mushroom eater, but when roaming around autumn forests, its the fly agaric that tends to catch the eye. Oh, #fungi! I missed you guys this year!

Garden's breath frozen in the nighttime cold. Ice crystals accentuate veins on leaves like ashen kohl eyeliner. It's the time of year when all color seeps out of the landscape leaving only a dull sepia. I wish I could hibernate till it's all over. Winter haters of the world, unite!

Feeling a bit useless at trivia nights, so now on a mission! Trying out fun games that would let me learn something new. #TIL that Giordano Bruno may have been writing with a graphite pencil (which was invented 36 years before the big fire).

I wish I had half as much optimism as the raspberry, still in bloom in the very middle of November. Then again, if we're reading this as a symbol of midlife crisis... that doesn't bode well.

A #kitchenmishap starting in a grocery store saddled me with three packs of focaccia dough. Pack one is now my first focaccia ever. Design: the kid (I did most of the left side); some of the colored veggies come from my half-empty November #garden.

Two more packs to go!

In a tragic twist of events, my cucumber broke. Made a cast for it using an (illegal) plastic straw. Leaves still look somewhat dehydrated, but I hope the poor thing recovers.

Offseason greenhouse makes me think of that one time when Moomintroll awoke from winter hibernation and the house and grounds were as if the same, but still eerily NOT the same

My Spring 2.0 window garden grow light setup doubles up as a night bug watching theater. Pictured: ...someone.

I can’t be the only one hosting a moth matinee, right?

Spring 2.0 update. As Virginia creeper turns wine red outside the window, my tomatoes (pictured here: 'Vilma') are stretching ever taller. AI says I can expect first fruit in January.

So pink! A maple tree at the parking lot of an unremarkable grocery store, yet it has the pinkest leaves I've ever seen. Had to touch them to see if they were by any chance some Chinese plastic.

Finally, a #harvest where I don't need a matchbox for scale! Behold - my potatoes. That's the entire lot. What they lack in quantity, they compensate for in size. The biggest one weighs 630 grams.

Mid-October raspberries. The bush is full of them—deep red, juicy drops. There are still lots of them past the first couple of frosts, too. Even though the sweetness has been gone for a while, they're still a joy amidst browning autumn leaves.

#doom and #gloom get doomier and gloomier. Legless, armless horrors are drawing waves. Shouldn't this be a time of joyous abundance?

Not exactly as advertised... yet? I planted this just this spring, so honestly, I wasn't expecting anything for another year or two.

Why should time and geography be the ones deciding whether this is spring or not? I am starting Spring 2.0 right now. Central heating and electricity should make up for whatever nature refuses to provide. Seeing things grow makes me happier, so I'll try to grow my own happiness.

Lesson learned: melons need actual time to grow. Pictured: one quarter of this year's melon #harvest. We ate half of this one, seeds and all (tastes like a surprisingly sweet cucumber). I have a bit bigger melon still out there, hoping it ripens a bit more. Matchbox for scale.
