I’ve just now in life occasionally started buying used books instead of new and… my goodness am I becoming obsessed with how intimately bonded I feel to a prior reader by observing the things they underlined or noted in the margins. New type of pen pal exchange? You just swap books with commentary.

My 1st publication of the year is out in Booth: A Journal. It’s impossible to explain how close I was to the brother I lost to those who didn’t have the fortune to know him. This piece is a vignette of a moment, but I hope it shares a glimmer of what that bond was to me, what it is to me still.
