Location: Maastrichterstraat 9 3500 Hasselt, Belgium Participating artists: Adriaan Rees, Annemarie Slobbe, Marnix Postma, Pablo Hannon, Peim van der Sloot, Stef Lemmens, Zoë d’Hont and Zaiyun Huang. Performance by Zoë d’Hont during Huiskamer van de kunstenaar 2023 in Amsterdam. You see someone sitting in a darkened space. The only light is a Japanese candle. She is sharing a story from her book. Photo by participating artist Zaiyun Huang. Currently she observes how the older generation of craftsmen in Jingdezhen (China) deals with rapid technological changes. The value of craftsmanship is starting to shift, because robots and AI are cheaper. Zaiyun questions the definition of ‘proletarian’ and reshapes the status into being ‘Pro artist’. In the photo you see Zaiyun standing behind a local ceramics professional who is holding up a banner with the text "Pro Artist". For five years, Stef Lemmens (BE) has been researching alternative forms of living. He looks into the link between art, sustainability and interaction. Stef lives in a self-built house on wheels in “Nomad City” in Belgium. Surrounding himself with participatory installations, portable constructions, and household structures, he aims to spark a conversation or uses it as an invitation to self-reflection. In the image you see a portable backpack to make tea. The wooden backpack contains a stove, cups and branches.

This artwork is based on a scene I saw in real life. I was traveling through a region which was war-ridden in the past. Within the remnants of a house a tree was growing. Quite a surreal sight.
