Another from Ruairi Bowen! Isn't this cute? Apparently it was used to summon him and others to dinner the other night! A tiny horn/bugle type thing. Must have gone "squeeeee". #HiddenHorn

There must be some story here! This was spotted by my lovely colleague Ruairi Bowen, it's someone's garden gate next to the Hereford Rowing Club. Excellent #HiddenHorn and there must be some explanation!?

#HiddenHornPlayer (though I think someone needs a word about how you hold that type of horn, though I suppose with flippers instead of hands there might be need for nuanced modification of technique somehow!).

Morning trip to see Roy Cox and have him work his magic on a couple of my horns. New corks and some tidying up and sounding great.

Some highlights from 2025 - looking forward to more music making in 2026! The audio here is from a live performance in October of Mozart's Concert in Eb for Horn KV 447 given by the Irish Baroque Orchestra under the directorship of Peter Whelan, one of many happy memories!
See you all in 2026!

Final recording release of the year! Out now and to mark the Australian Chamber Orchestra's 50th birthday this new disc (on ABC Classics, and available on CD and LP as well as download) includes two live performances

The penultimate recording release announcement for the year! And this one has been a long and exciting time in the making. Released last month this box set of 56 cantatas by Bach represents six years of performances by Stephan MacLeod and Gli Angeli Genève.

Happy Christmas folks! Here's a #HiddenHorn Christmas angel that Bertil van Boer shared with me recently!

Well, the weather was grim, but still a day for celebration.
As some of you already know, I submitted my PhD thesis ("Another voice that sings": Timbre, Portamento and Natural Horn Playing in France 1810s-1850s) at the University of Birmingham earlier in the year, successfully defended it early...

#HiddenHornPlayer spotted in this rather striking art work by Grenville Moore entitled "White Fallow Stag" which the @Fosse Gallery chose for their Christmas greetings this year.

It's bizarre for sure, but I kind of like it! #HiddenHorn spotted in this painting seen in Lucerne by my friend and colleague Mark Gebhart!

Last bit (I think!) from the "views from my music stand" (or views up my nostrils!) from the recent Solomon's Knot "Bach's Horn" disc. Here's a bit of Diana's aria "Jagen ist die Lust der Götter" from Bach's Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd. Cantata BWV 208

A final bit of "Monday Mozart" - here's some of the last movement of Mozart's Concerto in E flat for horn (K447) from my performance with @IrishBaroque Orchestra (dir. @PeterWhelanPP) last October in Kilkenny.

A couple of nice shots from the Ex Cathedra concert last week taken by the multitalented Melissa Brown - the Concert Producer for @excathedrachoir.bsky.social as well as a number of other things including host of "Bold as Brass" podcast.

I shared this a couple of years ago when we were rehearsing for the concert but in light of the release of the live recording of the Solomon's Knot "Bach's Horns" disc I thought it worth sharing again! My colleague Anna Drysdale and myself in full flow!

A little bit more "Monday Mozart" - here's the opening of the second movement of Mozart's Concerto in E flat for horn (K447) with Irish Baroque Orchestra (dir. Peter Whelan) from our performance last October in Kilkenny.
