Facebook Marketplace has finally figured out what I like

I'm seeing so many folks commenting on that Atlantic article about how it's gotten so hard to get students to watch movies and like, I've been teaching comic books for 10 years and often can't get students to read an 8-page Batman or Archie story. It is what it is.

“Gotham Central” (2002-06) by Ed Brubaker & Greg Rucka with art by Michael Lark was a police procedural set in Batman’s Gotham City. It was an innovative and influential revisionist story, underscoring and reframing the human costs of the superheroism. 1/7 #GothamCentral #Batman #ComicsStudies

I love @adamreck.bsky.social for many reasons but one of those reasons is that he nurtures my long-simmering hatred of Hank McCoy, who has always been a Bad Person. (I would have added all the times this Obvious Villain has called a woman "toots.")

Our latest for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social talks Gotham Central and cultural capital! #Batman #GothamCentral #ComicsStudies
As a cult classic that eschewed commercial success in favour of grounded storytelling, Gotham Central’s successes and failures provide a potent case study for the concept of cultural capital in the comics industry and the variant ways that we might define “success” as a concept. #gothamcentral 1/12

With X-Men #24 taking the Age of Revelation Finale reveal to another level, this is a great time to talk about Beast’s evolution over the decades.

Our latest @sequentialscholars.bsky.social talks possibilities for storytelling subversion in Gotham Central. #Batman #GothamCentral #Spiderman #ComicsStudies
The first story arc of “Gotham Central,” titled “In the Line of Duty,” knowingly subverts expectations of a “traditional” superhero story. A comparison with a more traditional story arc, in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #6, underscores this subversion. 1/10 #Batman #GothamCentral #ComicsStudies
