Skived off for the length of a short chapter and a long black 💭

“There is gentleness in trouble, within ambiguity, in what is born, in what emerges and claims this nascent and suspended space.”

For lovers of great Irish literature, rich & daring language, complex & life-like characters & a huge, horrible, beautiful love story, Anna T urges you to try The Lesser Bohemians by Eimear McBride.

Somehow, with everything else that was going on last year, I failed to notice that my novel came out in paperback in the UK. So it was a pleasure at the shop today to open a box in which a handful of copies were buried under other people’s special orders. I’m celebrating with my favourite ramen 📚🍜

Over the summer, Anna M. read & loved Anne Truitt’s Daybook, a journal of the artist’s life & creative practice from 1974 to 1980. Wise, deeply insightful & fascinating as a document of artistic process, this is a book to treasure. 📚🧡

I’ve spent a lovely day catching up on my #KateBriggs24 reading. Here are some favourite snippets: about relationality; the individual within/protected by the community; what marks a particular work as “necessary”; & the intersection of aesthetics & ethics in the representation of the everyday.

The tenderness in of this image, of “my reading friend”. And it is *translation* that enables this experience. 🖤

I’ve been thinking about this all day. Trying to narrow down my own supporting texts. Definitely John Berger’s 1953 essay ‘Drawing’. And I’m beginning to feel that Kate Briggs’s This Little Art is just such another bracing text. #KateBriggs24

I love Nathalie Leger’s attention to Barthes’s stationery in her Editor’s Preface to TPofTN: blue & black ink, felt-tip pen, paper clips, pieces of tape, & a ballpoint pen which “he did not like using … but, considering them useful for making the odd note, always carried…) p.xx #KateBriggs24

“At this hour all cats are grey & all carpets are beautiful; the colours, fused by the evening, acquire richness.” (p232) RW’s frequent evocation of colour made me think about her earlier mention of Goethe’s theory of colour (p155) & I just went down a rabbit hole. #BlackLamb24
