Part of the Ordination service of every priest is the Exhortation, which the bishop gives. It is a powerful call to embrace the responsibilities and understand the weight of this office: to steward, to guard, to work, and to rely.

The Prayer Book's Exhortation for Faithful Priests
The Exhortation of the Prayer Book's Ordinal is sobering. Like the Commissioning Oath, it places a heavy responsibility on the ordinand.

Institutions are human creations; institutional failure can and does occur everywhere. When this failure happens in the church, it has a cosmic weight to it. How do we stay in imperfect institutions? How do we minister to those around us who have been hurt?

Mercy in the Midst: Courage to Stay in an Imperfect Church
In an imperfect church, what is often experienced is the limitation of human institutions rather than the absence of divine care.

There is incredible power in the arts to communicate the gospel. Such missional use of creativity is rooted deep within the Church's history, though it has faltered. We ought to recover the arts and integrate them more deeply into the life of our churches:

Though you may be accustomed to seeing your priest in an alb and stole, choir dress has always been an appropriate vestment in the Anglican tradition. I would argue there are reasons it may be the preferred choice! Choir dress is the vestment that is never wrong.

“O Root of Jesse” seems, perhaps, out of place among the others. Other “O Antiphons” appear to emphasize key attributes of who God is. “Radix Jesse” feels more like a minor detail about Jesus’ human lineage, but it’s important in the grand prophetic scheme:

Root of Jesse feels important in the grand prophetic scheme, but why it’s listed beside other Antiphons, we might struggle to understand.

Why is Wisdom—or in Latin, Sapientia—the first of the seven “O Antiphons?” Because this is Wisdom from on high: the divine, personified Wisdom, who was present at the creation of the world.
