New data shows opt-out blood-borne virus testing in emergency departments is highly effective.

The programme identified many undiagnosed infections, including hepatitis C & HIV but particularly hepatitis B. Almost 70% of people with a new diagnosis hadn't been tested before.

A person from the UK has sadly died after becoming infected with rabies, following contact with a dog abroad. There is no risk to the wider public in relation to this case.

🆕 Today, UKHSA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have confirmed the first detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in the UK.
There is currently no evidence of wider circulation in birds or mosquitoes, and the risk to the public remains very low.
