Electrification is often seen as the spark for development. But in much of Africa, the biggest benefits may come not from households plugging in, but from the community services that light up around them.

Forthcoming in *JDE*! We study Burkina Faso’s 2008–17 grid rollout to compare community vs. private electrification effects. Despite low household uptake, electrification boosted public goods—schools, water, lighting—and benefited even unconnected homes. ⚡📊 Now online: doi.org/10.1016/j.jd...
