UTRGV associate professor of sociology studying social policy, poverty, inequality, and public opinion.
Anytime a cool front passes, and a north wind blows, the entire campus smells of tortillas from the nearby Maseca plant, and I think that is beautiful.

I’m working on a playlist for my senior level soc of gender class. I’ll be playing it before class as folks are arriving.

Any suggestions for SOCI radio?

For example, today’s listening was “I’m Just a Girl” by No Doubt and Brad Paisley’s “I’m Still a Guy”

The RGV, specifically McAllen, topping the list of most overweight/obese cities in the US again.

Between the lack of parks, heat, poor healthcare, and limited options for affordable healthy food, it’s no surprise.

We crowdsourced 85 teams to indep. computationally reproduce results from a single study in randomized conditions. Reproducibility:

• depends heavily on the transparency of materials
• high (~95%) for same sign/sig, but low (btw. 48-77% depending on transparency) when requiring within 0.1 effects

I was a guest on a cool Podcast last week. We talked social generosity, sobriety, Dolly Parton, and what I love about Texas.

Check it out if you want to hear me nerd out and probably get some details wrong 😆

“Even in Texas, which has the largest share of uninsured residents in the nation, the [Rio Grande] Valley had unusually high numbers. Women suffered and died from cervical cancer at inordinate rates…’It was an area that was forgotten.’”
