As someone who does HEMA, very much agree that women should have swords (along with non-binary folks).

If you live in or near Oxford, are a woman (cis or trans)/nonbinary person/trans identifying, and you want to learn consensual historical violence, come to this workshop next Saturday (19th July) hosted by my HEMA club! Tickets are free but space is limited: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-sword-in...
A Sword in the Hand 2025

And that is a wrap for Day 2 of #CALC25 and for me that’s a wrap for the conference! I am on annual leave beginning tomorrow, so will likely miss Day 3.

The past two days have been packed with information but it’s been so illuminating and inspiring. Hope to ‘see’ everyone next year!

I’m already enjoying Christine Moeller’s session ‘“I’m killing myself to fit”: librarianship’s marginalization of neurodivergent librarians’. As a librarian who is likely neurodivergent (pursuing official diagnosis), a lot of the information is ringing true. #CALC25

Amazing session from Twanna Hodge and Abigail Philips, ‘Librarianship in the mirror: reflecting on our complicities.’ #CALC25

Finished an incredible session from Tina Liu and Jennie Fallis, ‘Lessons from the Tortoise.’ Clearly articulates the problems with EDI initiatives within many universities (which are often corporate, ‘tick-box,’ and surface level rather than actually radical). Less neoliberalism, please! #CALC25

While waiting for the start, we have had puffins and a puppy cam. Yeah, I would say this a good conference. #CALC25

Loved @heroicendeavour.bsky.social's talk on Libraries as 3rd Spaces, closing a genuinely great Day 1 of #CALC25. "The fluidity of the 3rd space gives librarians a unique freedom to drive change". I wrote about this recently in @irishexaminer.bsky.social: mural.maynoothuniversity.ie/id/eprint/19...

Finished Day 1 of #CALC25 with a really interesting session from @heroicendeavour.bsky.social. Learned a lot and have a lot to think about in my role as an academic librarian.

Eek, I missed Edgardo Civallero’s session ‘Slow libraries, radical futures’! I think I misread the timetable in my exhaustion and thought I had a longer break…. Oh well, I can just say that I was embracing the concept by taking it slow for an hour or so. #CALC25

Spotted this gorgeous cat on my walk earlier. I may not have a cat now, but I am pretty sure posting cat pictures during library conferences is mandatory. #CALC25

Really interesting to hear about Christina Kamposiori’s research on EDI in job specs (I now need to scour the RL PD Bank). Also interesting to hear that by comparison, there were a number of positions in the US that were created to drive EDI (at least at time of the research). #CALC25

Took a break to grab some paracetamol and lie down for a little bit before getting into the next #CALC25 sessions. I’m nearly a month post-appendectomy, but I still get EXHAUSTED.

In addition to ‘Queer as Folklore’, I have a whole list of books and articles to read thanks to the wonderful #CALC25 attendees sharing knowledge in the chat.

Engaging with this community is why I’m glad to attend the conference live rather than just watching recordings afterwards.

@sachacoward.bsky.social's #CALC25 keynote is definitely the most entertaining keynote I've ever attended - we've had Dragula, we've had the sexuality of robots, we've had Hans Christian Andersen face down weeping on Dickens' lawn, we've had sapphic mermaids, we've had swords as phalluses...
