I would like to argue that protest signs are folk art, and a form of creative expression that clearly reflects cultural context.

The coracle of Celtic myth was light enough to be lifted and strong enough to cross realms. Woven of willow, covered in hide, it ferried saints, druids, and dreamers into otherworlds. The vessel was belief itself. #WyrdWednesday

This weekend, I watched a man teach several others how to arrange muskets in this interlocking pattern. Tradition is passed on every day, all around us, filling the world with #folklore

Court jesters in the Middle Ages were licensed to mock the king. Their jokes could defuse tension or deliver veiled truth. In a world of swords and silence, jesters spoke freely—if they played the fool well enough to survive it. #WyrdWednesday

A little #folklife today. My mom taught me to sew nearly 30 years ago. Today I'm working on an 18th century bedgown in a simple linen, because in the 1750s I am poor. Costume helps express identity, in reenacting and daily life, too.

In Slavic folklore, the effigy of Marzanna — winter personified — is drowned or burned in spring. Children carry her through the village, then cast her into the river. It is not merely a ritual — it is a symbolic exorcism of stillness, a summoning of bloom. #FolkloreSunday

In 18th-century German almanacs, it was recorded that bees should not be disturbed on the first warm day of spring. Superstition held that if bees swarmed too early, war would follow by summer. Beekeepers watched their hives like prophets watched stars. #FolkloreSunday

A photo from the enslaved quarters at Mount Vernon. right now. This weekend, one of the events at the estate was the start of a sewing project. Two garments were started, both will be in the updated museum space when it finishes renovations.

Conspiracy theories are folklore! Like myths, they offer explanations for why the world is a certain way. Did ancient people genuinely believe myths? If people can believe in pizza gate, the idea that Zeus became a shower of gold to impregnate Danae doesn't seem so farfetched a belief.
