This year is the 150th year of competitive baseball in Seattle! I took a look back at Seattle and the surrounding areas in 1877, and got to know the team that started it all: the Alki Base Ball Club. They captured Seattle's hearts and we haven't been without baseball since.
Seattle, We Have a Base Ball Team! The Seattle Alkis and the Arrival of Competitive Base Ball in 1877
100 years before the Mariners played their first season, the Alkis gave Seattle fans their first taste of the base ball epidemic.

It's actually pretty brutal that college baseball starts so early. I guess it's fine if you're in California or the South. But anywhere else, oof.

Oh! Just realized that both our local college baseball teams starts playing tomorrow! I wonder if I'll be able to convince the kiddos we should got...in the cold....and probably rain...

That's what I hear!

I'm sorry. Hugs to you! ♥️

Looking up information on Winter Cup and there's something so funny to me about the competition being streamed live for free, but you have to pay to watch podium training. I mean, I guess that makes sense, get money from the real sickos and try to draw the casuals in for free, but it's funny.

We have an event next week to officially end the fundraiser, and then I need to find another project! I need something to obsess and worry over that’s productive.

I’ve thrown myself into stuff at the kids’ school this year because I care, and as a distraction from *everything*. The election was huge, and we’ve just finished a fundraiser that went better than expected. It’s just really affirming to know there are still wins to be won out there, big and small.

Exactly one month until my fantasy draft begins. Gotta start researching and preparing. Lotta pressure when you're the defending champion.

What a blessing of the internet age!

The “Notable Alumni” section of my high school’s Wikipedia page lists 3 people, none of them what I’d consider “famous”, so I suppose there’s still a shot for me to become the famous person to go to my high school.

Today is my Friday because it is the kids’ Friday and I am a-okay with that! We somehow got through all the Valentine’s Party stuff, the fundraiser ends today, and the levies passed, so suddenly I have my time back! Plan to mostly just binge read and watch ice skating this weekend and I cannot wait!

Oh, I’m so sorry. What a sweet little face he has ♥️

There’s so much! Bobby Ayala punching a hotel window! John Marzano punching Paul O’Neil! Alex Rodriguez before anyone wanted to punch him!

That’s incredible! And so very mid-90s!

The first big writing thing I did at Lookout Landing was a 4-part series on the 1997 Mariners in 2017 and that was (mostly…you know, the bullpen, the trade deadline, and the playoffs) a great time. So maybe I shall give it a go. I haven’t re-lived a whole season since then.

I have a couple things on 2001 I’m doing. I won’t totally ignore it. But 1996 is a rich text.
February 12, 2026 at 2:43 AM
Been toying with the idea of doing a series on the 1996 Mariners because I think it’s a fascinating year in Mariners history, and everyone is going to be doing stuff on 2001 and I want to be different. I’m just worried I’ll write a couple installments then totally lose interest, as I’m wont to do 😂

10 year old: Mom the sourdough grew a lot!
Me: Yeah, yeah, that’s what it’s supposed to do.
*opens the fridge later* Oh! Yes, yes it did 😂

Tacoma voter turnout up to almost 26% too, a little higher than projected. These two levies were the only thing on the ballot, so it's really nice that the people who took the time to vote did so overwhelmingly in favor of schools and living in a society!

All together now! Niiiiiiiiiiice!

(Percentages for Prop 2, Prop 1 is into 70% yes votes!! While that's better, it's not as nice. I also have questions for the people voting differently on the two propositions.)

Motion to cancel Valentine's Day this year on account of I don't think I have it in me to figure out all the stuff for two kids' parties at school tomorrow, the details of which I've literally only learned 2 days ago and this morning. Agh.

Nobody ever gets punished for being terrible. Sometimes they get gold medals. ugh. I hate it!
February 11, 2026 at 9:59 PM
Booo!!! Why can’t skating judges be corrupt in a good way???
February 11, 2026 at 9:57 PM
Maybe it’s because I’m predisposed to hate them, but the whole vibe from the evil French is that they take themselves too seriously and it almost feels cartoonish in that sense, like it’s a parody of people taking their art too seriously.
