This year is the 150th year of competitive baseball in Seattle! I took a look back at Seattle and the surrounding areas in 1877, and got to know the team that started it all: the Alki Base Ball Club. They captured Seattle's hearts and we haven't been without baseball since.
Seattle, We Have a Base Ball Team! The Seattle Alkis and the Arrival of Competitive Base Ball in 1877
100 years before the Mariners played their first season, the Alkis gave Seattle fans their first taste of the base ball epidemic.

There’s so much! Bobby Ayala punching a hotel window! John Marzano punching Paul O’Neil! Alex Rodriguez before anyone wanted to punch him!

That’s incredible! And so very mid-90s!

The first big writing thing I did at Lookout Landing was a 4-part series on the 1997 Mariners in 2017 and that was (mostly…you know, the bullpen, the trade deadline, and the playoffs) a great time. So maybe I shall give it a go. I haven’t re-lived a whole season since then.

I have a couple things on 2001 I’m doing. I won’t totally ignore it. But 1996 is a rich text.

Been toying with the idea of doing a series on the 1996 Mariners because I think it’s a fascinating year in Mariners history, and everyone is going to be doing stuff on 2001 and I want to be different. I’m just worried I’ll write a couple installments then totally lose interest, as I’m wont to do 😂

10 year old: Mom the sourdough grew a lot!
Me: Yeah, yeah, that’s what it’s supposed to do.
*opens the fridge later* Oh! Yes, yes it did 😂

Tacoma voter turnout up to almost 26% too, a little higher than projected. These two levies were the only thing on the ballot, so it's really nice that the people who took the time to vote did so overwhelmingly in favor of schools and living in a society!

All together now! Niiiiiiiiiiice!

(Percentages for Prop 2, Prop 1 is into 70% yes votes!! While that's better, it's not as nice. I also have questions for the people voting differently on the two propositions.)

Motion to cancel Valentine's Day this year on account of I don't think I have it in me to figure out all the stuff for two kids' parties at school tomorrow, the details of which I've literally only learned 2 days ago and this morning. Agh.

Nobody ever gets punished for being terrible. Sometimes they get gold medals. ugh. I hate it!

Booo!!! Why can’t skating judges be corrupt in a good way???
February 11, 2026 at 9:57 PM
Maybe it’s because I’m predisposed to hate them, but the whole vibe from the evil French is that they take themselves too seriously and it almost feels cartoonish in that sense, like it’s a parody of people taking their art too seriously.

Blink and you might not have caught it. On Monday, Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry took to the rink and staked their claim to the ice dancing gold medal. Dancing to Madonna’s “Vogue,” ...

Oh my god I loved every single thing about that. Holy shit that was so good!!!

It’s okay in this case!

Not to be dramatic, but the evil French team must be destroyed.

They were so fun in the rhythm dance too!

But seriously, to keep going and performing after that? I don’t know how she did that instead of crying. Seriously.

The British team is delightful. So much fun. I didn’t see any mistakes. Not sure what you’re talking about.

Same!!!

I don’t know anything about ice dancing so I really don’t have anything to say about it, but just know I’m sitting here watching and squealing because it’s all so good and I’m enjoying this very much.

I’ve had that on my list to read for a couple years!

I do think they could lean into the quirk a little more and become transcendent.

Rude! It’s IS culturally significant! One day of school can’t compare to something that will be remembered forever.
