Fuck, this is correct. They sent Durbin out to vote for it *because* he's retiring.
Assume all the yes and no votes from Dem senators are strategic and not sincere votes. The party caucus made a decision. No way to know how many were in favor. Then the caucus decided who would vote yes and no based on what would protect each of them politically the most. That’s how this works.

I had to call his Illinois office because DC's voicemail was overloaded/offline, but @durbin.senate.gov sure got a voicemail from me telling him how angry and disappointed I am.
I suggest we all call our capitulating Democrat senators and give them what for. Dick Durbin will be hearing from me.

Very proud to have been the action editor for this one-- as I was reading it I kept thinking "I can't wait until this is published, I'm going to share this with all of my students!"

Folks in Chicago wanting to do more to resist ICE-- did you know that AT&T has a massive contract with ICE? I'll be taking part in this demonstration to try to pressure AT&T to drop their contract and make it clear that there are consequences for businesses supporting Trump's Fascism. Join me?
Did you know your phone carrier contracts with ICE? Join us for a peaceful demonstration outside the AT&T store to demand they drop their contract with the DHS and stop profiting from terrorizing our communities!

This is half a mile from my home, and also immediately next to an elementary school. Is there any oversight? Will there be any consequences for this recklessness and cruelty?

Same. Though I have occasionally wondered if some people would be better served with more investments helping people in poverty (e.g. housing first policies for people experiencing homelessness.) Want to pony up for that, JD?
I spend more time in the ED than the average person, and have never given a damn about the immigration status of other people there.
What I do know as a public health prof is 23% in US are underinsured and we have a physician shortage, and those factors combine to reduced access to outpatient care

Vance: "If you're an American citizen & you've been to the hospital in the last few years, you've probably noticed wait times are especially large & very often somebody who's there in the ER is an illegal alien. Why do those people get healthcare benefits at hospitals paid for by American citizens?"

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.

It occurs to me that it feels a little self-serving that the only people who have coherent ideologies are we, the smug elites who define what makes an ideology coherent.
