So apparently my work computer needs to be sent to Poland, which is one of the least expected things to happen lately #PhDLife

I’m ambitious but not competitive, and every time people talk about funding like it’s a sport, I feel like the exact wrong kind of person for academia. I want to do good work, not “win.”. #AcademicSky #PhDLife #GrantWriting

On yesterday’s episode of “does Alma even have a single clue what she’s doing?” we had my surprised realisation that time-to-event and survival analysis are the same thing.
Stay tuned for more unimpressive thinking!

In passport line in Prague remembering my best experience in US:

Agent: why are you here?

I’m a Professor, giving a talk.

What’s you subject?

Political Philosophy.

My favourite!!

Really??

No. I say that to all the Professors.

Having an aunt who’s been collecting puzzles and stuffies since the 90s, whose home looks like a pink toy store, and who absolutely adores you is truly a blessing for my kid. For me, it’s a gift to see their relationship grow.

This is an especially worrying statement when facial recognition can be inaccurate, biased, and generally make mistakes. Basing whether someone should be in the US or not, and ignoring physical media like a birth certificate, is ripe for disaster bsky.app/profile/jose...
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

It’s… I can’t even form a coherent sentence. In high school we had some photos of propaganda that we discussed in history class. How that was way before internet, so people couldn’t easily know it was propaganda. Seems info access wasn’t the answer… it’s a heart breaking timeline we’re in.

“She’s not like a five-year-old — she has 35 years of experience of being five.”

I was once told to think like that when talking about people with intellectual disabilities, and it truly makes a difference.
