Through the window, Austin turned once to look back. For a heartbeat, their eyes met. His expression was uncertain— not angry, not forgiving, just 𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥. Then Josie guided him inside, the door closing softly behind them.

“I just wanted him to see,” Elle whispered to herself.

She watched her mom gesture toward her once, explaining, apologizing, taking the weight of it all. Elle couldn’t hear the words, but she knew their meaning— that she’d crossed a line too big for even magic to fix.
October 16, 2025 at 3:21 PM
Teddy’s jaw worked, caught between relief and anger. Josie’s hand came up to her mouth as she listened, Austin pressed close to his mother’s side, eyes still glossy from shock.

Inside the car, Elle sat hugging her knees. The interior felt too small, too heavy with everything she wanted to say.

Alex reached back from the driver’s seat, gently squeezing her hand. “You’ve got a good heart, kiddo,” he said quietly.

Her parents stepped out, their words carried just enough that Elle could make out fragments through the cracked window— “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺’𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦… 𝘯𝘰 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮… 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘰…”

In Chestnut Ridge when the Riverstone Ranch came into view, the porch light flicked on—two worried parents stepped outside.

Elle watched Austin run to them, his small figure swallowed in their arms, and she stayed in the car.
October 16, 2025 at 3:05 PM
Alex crouched in front of her, his voice low and steady, “you scared us, sweetheart.” But then he glanced at Alice—something unsaid passing between them. 𝘋𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘺𝘦𝘭𝘭. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸.

Beside them, Austin’s voice wavered, “I wanna go home.”

Alice nodded gently, “we’ll take you, honey.”
October 16, 2025 at 3:00 PM
By the time Alice and Alex reached the portal, the sky had gone black. Caleb stood waiting with Elle & Austin clung to her other side, pale and silent.

Alice’s expression shifted from fury to heartbreak. “Elle.”

Elle looked down. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I just wanted to show him the realm.”
October 16, 2025 at 2:55 PM
Alice didn’t let him finish. “She did. I can feel it.” She swallowed hard. “She went to the realm.”

Without another word, she called her father. “Dad,” she said when he answered. “Please tell me you know where my daughter is.” There was a pause, “oh thank Watcher. We’re coming.”
October 16, 2025 at 2:50 PM
Meanwhile, far away in Strangerville, Alice had a sinking feeling.

She stood by the window, phone pressed to her ear. “They’re not at the fair,” she said, voice tight. “None of the other parents have seen them since sundown.”

Alex’s hands were balled into fists. “You don’t think she—”
October 16, 2025 at 2:48 PM
Elle hesitated, still shaken. “My grandpa,” she said finally. “Caleb Vatore. He’ll know what to do.”

At the name, Elsie’s brows lifted slightly. “Ah. A Vatore. I see,” she stood, brushing dust off her shirt. “Alright then. Let’s get you to your grandpa.”

Before she could say more, the woman sat beside them. “Hey, hey… it’s alright now,” her tone had changed—gentle, grounding. “You’re safe.”

“Who are you?” Elle asked.

“My name’s Elsie Joy,” she said. “And I 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 have time for this shit,” she sighed. “Now… who can I call to get you both home?”
October 16, 2025 at 2:39 PM
Austin's eyes were wide and red-rimmed. “It— it talked t’me,” he whispered. “It knew m’name, an' then it said somethin' else. Somethin' that didn't make sense.”

Elle crouched beside him, voice shaking. “It—what? I’m sorry, Austin. I didn’t know it would—I just wanted to show you the realm.”
October 16, 2025 at 2:32 PM
The woman exhaled, lowering her hand. “The 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬?” she muttered, half in disbelief, half in relief. “Watcher, what were you guys thinking?”

But when she looked at them—really looked—her expression softened.

Chiyo had vanished. Typical.
October 16, 2025 at 2:27 PM
The creature screeched, the sound fading as its form was drawn into the pages. The runes sealed themselves shut with a pulse of blinding light.

Then—silence.
October 16, 2025 at 2:22 PM
The Wraith writhed, shadows curling like smoke. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘦—

“I 𝘥𝘰,” the woman snapped, and with a flick of her wrist, the flames burst into a torrent that wrapped around the Wraith, pulling it back toward the book.
October 16, 2025 at 2:19 PM
She looked like she’d stepped straight out of an old painting, eyes fierce and bright with purpose. The air around her shimmered with power.

“Enough,” she said. Her voice was low, controlled — but it carried the kind of authority that silenced the world.
October 16, 2025 at 2:10 PM
A sudden roar of heat broke through the chaos.

The earth beneath them glowed, and a streak of fire sliced through the air. The Wraith howled—an awful, distorted sound—as the flames slammed into its chest.

From the courtyard archway, a woman strode forward.
October 16, 2025 at 2:07 PM
“I can’t leave her!” Elle shouted, staring at Chiyo, who was still frantically paging through the book.

And then the Wraith’s shadowed hand lashed forward. The book flew from Chiyo’s grasp & landed with a thud near Elle’s feet.

“Stupid,” Chiyo whispered, eyes wide with guilt. “We shouldn’t have—”
October 16, 2025 at 1:53 PM
The Wraith lunged & Elle barely had time to think — she threw up her hands, the first spell that came to her lips bursting out. 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘢!

A purple shield flared to life, but it began to shatter under the Wraith’s touch.

“We have t’go!” Austin yelled as his voice cracked—terrified, desperate.
October 16, 2025 at 1:46 PM
Austin screamed as the creature surged forward & the force knocked them off their feet. Elle’s palms scraped against the ground; her vision blurred.

“Chiyo!” she cried. “What do we do?!”

Chiyo was already on her knees, going through the book in a panic. “I— I can’t find the reversal spell—”
October 16, 2025 at 1:35 PM
Chiyo stumbled back, clutching the summoning book to her chest. “It’s not supposed to—”

The Wraith’s voice cut through her words—𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦… 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘮𝘦. Its shape shifted like smoke caught in a storm. 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘨𝘰𝘥𝘴.

Elle’s throat locked & her heart pounded.
October 16, 2025 at 1:30 PM
The Night Wraith’s form towered above them — a jagged silhouette woven from mist and ash. Its hollow eyes burned with a cruel, ancient intelligence. The stars overhead flickered out one by one as though the sky itself were afraid.
