This is a perfect example of how a historical question needs to be narrow rather than broad

As in, not an elephant, but what the elephants drink
I always tell students if you ask a good question the article will write itself

Shalom, friends! Serah bat Asher, beloved figure in Jewish lore, appears for the first time in this week’s parsha. Also for the first time, a Judeo-Persian prayer poem praising this Iranian Jewish folk hero is translated into English by Alan Niku! Be the first to hear it!

TL;DR: the Talmud is not madlibs, but antisemites and conspiracy theorists want you to believe it is.
Those lists of fake Talmud quotes contain things like "Gentiles are not humans, they are beasts."

It's not like some rabbi actually says that, but we don't hold by that opinion. No. You basically have to paste together words like you're cutting a ransom note from a magazine to get that sentence.

4a. Just want to emphasize this: You cannot say that you're just anti-Zionist and not antisemitic, and then go spread hate about the Talmud.

That's basically the same as saying "I'm not racist, I just think we need to defend the white race against [insert racist slurs here]"
4. Anyone who tries to suggest that the Talmud is what Zionists or Israelis believe in is trying to trick you into accepting lies about the Talmud. They want you to think "Well, the Zionists are bad, so the Talmud must also be bad."

The Talmud is a *Jewish* text, not an Israeli one.

Rob Reiner...may his memory be a blessing.

Nearly all of my favorite movies growing up...and still remain the most quotable:

In 2019, Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg hosted a Chanukkah party in his home for his family & closest friends. An antisemite went to his house, armed w/ a machete, & stabbed him & 5 other guests. He died after nearly 60 days in a coma.

He lived ~20 minutes away from me.

I met Miriam on 🐦 shortly after...
During the Hanukkah attacks of 2019, I decided to rededicate myself to my Jewish identity. Through taking up Daf Yomi. Yes, as a 7.5 year “fuck you” to antisemites. But also as a way to rediscover joy in Judaism again. 1/

Miriam does such important work for the entire Jewish community. Jewish learning is not just resilience, it is survival.
Shalom friends, thank you to everyone who has given so far so I can keep doing this work ♥️. I won’t hit our goal by Hanukkah. So, I’m keeping the fundraiser open until the end of the year. Jewish learning is Jewish identity, it’s Jewish resilience! ➡️

Yeah. And not just on Bluesky / the internet. Totally relatable, though.

I'm exhausted.
My fave part of Bluesky is that people will address you as if you speak for your entire country

Super great

I also love how well people recognize sarcasm

I just read in a book...I won't say which one, (it's non-fiction)...the following: (re knitted kippot) because girls might knit them for their boyfriends, people were "fearful where this premarital yarmulka knitting might lead".

I don't know what emoji or gif to use for my reaction, tbh.

They tried to convince people carob was chocolate.

(Fully aware there was no chocolate at the time in the Levant, which makes it that much worse!)

This is Torah.
This is why my most "scare the hoes" political opinion is: MAGA is avodah zarah.
When I call MAGA/GOP post-truth, this is what I mean. It’s hard for people who value truth to fully grasp.

“But don’t they care about underlying facts? Don’t they worry it’ll come out?”

No, they really don’t. They reject that factual reality matters. Words are just things you say to get something.

This is the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the pogrom carried out by Germans only 87 years ago, an event that was another step towards the Holocaust. The murder of over 6,000,000 Jews and others that the Nazis deemed undesirable began gradually.
