Our new preprint characterizing the red grouse microbiota for the first time using metagenomics: doi.org/10.1101/2025.... The red grouse microbiota is really interesting, as these birds rely on a very high fibre plant species (heather) for the majority of their diet. #microbiota
Metagenomics reveals fibre fermentation and AMR pathways in red grouse (Lagopus scotica) microbiota
Background: The avian caecal microbiota plays a vital role in host nutrition, enabling non-digestible, fibrous material to be converted into compounds that can be absorbed and used as an energy source...

It’s out!! We subjected soils from 30 different locations across Europe to extreme events and found that soil fungal and bacterial communities showed consistent responses that could be predicted from their origin! With @knightjar.bsky.social and many collaborators!

Many people take "non-traditional" career paths in academia.
My Leading Edge colleagues and I did! We wrote for
PLOS Biology about how non-linear careers are increasingly common, but funding agencies and search committees penalize these paths. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
Supporting nonlinear careers to diversify science
Those who follow non-linear career trajectories often face disadvantages in academia. This Perspective looks at why individuals might choose non-linear careers and how these benefit diversity in scien...
