Tips to avoid PTSD after experiencing trauma 1. When you are safe, remind yourself that right now you are safe. Say your name out loud. Say the date. List things you car see/hear/touch. Stomp your feet on the ground. Do whatever works for you that reminds you that you are safe in the present moment, [Picture of a flower with the caption: like to take pictures of nature to ground myself.] 2. Feel your feelings when it is safe to do so and try not to be mad at them. Change the story to something like, "it makes sense to be afraid because I value my life, so thank you for reminding me of that. But look at all the ways I am living, while staying safe. I can trust myself to recognize danger and get myself away from it". Or, "I feel guilty for surviving because I love my community and fellow humans. As my capacity allows, I will help others rebuild and grieve. I've heard the message from guilt and I don't need to live in it anymore". Or, "i'm angry because I didn't deserve that abuse. I know I deserve kindness and I'm going to take this anger to fuel my actions to keep me safe` 3.Make art to process your feelings. especially if that feels safer than talking 4.Go for slow walks. (Walking and thinking/talking about bad experiences is ike EMDR if you can't afford a therapist l[or for in between visits if you can't stop thinking about it| because your eyes are constantly moving from side to side while you walk). Connect with safe friends/family so you know you aren't alone and you are loved 6. Talk with people who have the ability to listen without judging, minimizing your pain, or amplifying your trauma. Not everyone is a good listener or has the capacity to listen; it's important to be selective. 7. Feel your body and try to stay connected to it. Body scans can be good for this. 8. Shake, dance, walk, run, stretch, etc your body as you re able. 9. Make a small weekly goal that iS achievable and then work towards it. 10. Rest lots to give your mind and body a chance to recuperate, but if you find yourself ruminating, get up and do something to break that ruminating cycle and help rest feel restorative 11. Be kind to yourself and treat yourself like a dear friend, 12. Ask for help from a professional if having a Panic attack or feeling suicidal.
