So, new year new me and all—should I finally try setting up multistreaming?

I’m only on Twitch right now, but…would people watch on YT?

I’m a little apprehensive about splitting my chat streams since it’s so hard to interact with chatters on the other platform.

Just a reminder that tonight at ~ 7pm EST, we're going to be adding some of the last few technical updates to our custom Linux install, and then moving on to theming!

Come hang out–all are welcome, whether you love Linux or have never touched it!

I'll be back to streaming again tomorrow (2/28) @ 7:00pm (ish) EST!

Come hang out as we knock some more items off the custom Linux install list!

We have a few small items to tackle first, and then we'll get into theming!

Oh look, it's me, almost a month late with my 2025 review post. I'm nothing if not consistent with these!

TL;DR - 2025 did not go how I planned at all, but somehow it went much, much better.

I didn't have the 2025 I had planned for, but ended up with something so much more!

If you do, send it my way! I'd love to see it!

Hm, I'd be curious to dig into the rector conflicts here–I use it extensively in my Filament projects for upgrades and whatnot, so that could be a deal-breaker.

Any Laravel devs I know using the Mago toolchain?

It looks awesome and I'm considering diving deeper into it, but I feel like I haven't heard much about it yet?

Want to know what goes into setting up a custom Linux install?

Or maybe you just want to see the new setup?

Either way, I'm streaming live right now, so come hang out!

Definitely going with a shelf and things in the background! Not the one that’s back there currently, but some other one.

Currently, the color scheme in the office is cream fabric, dark walnut wood, black metal, green walls, and orange accents, so ideally I’ll add things that match!
January 18, 2026 at 8:44 PM
Ok, sweet–I think that's the main piece of knowledge I've been missing as far as the fg/bg balance goes.

I'm going to take a swing at all of this and see where I can end up. I'll post updates as I have them.

Thanks again for the insight–this has been immensely helpful! 💪
January 18, 2026 at 7:41 PM
Oh awesome! I'll take a look at the 200x and go from there.

I _am_ curious, though–I'm going to have a few warm lights dotted along my background, but should I also have a dedicated light to light the backdrop as well? Or should I be looking for the key+fill to do the bulk of the work there for me?
January 18, 2026 at 7:31 PM
Hmm, I’ll have to see if I can swing that. Right now, my desk isn’t sitting up against a wall in front due to room constraints, but I wonder if there is something I could use in place of a wall 🤔

I’ll give it a try even with the wall far away, though—might still have enough oomph to work!
January 18, 2026 at 6:54 PM
All in all, though, this is SO helpful. I'm going to keep fiddling with the lights, but I see an actual softbox in my future.

Getting the bg/fg lightness balanced and reducing shadows are my top priorities at the moment, so if I have to invest to make that easier, I will!
January 18, 2026 at 5:55 PM
Re: the background being lighter than I am, totally agree. One of the things I'm trying to figure out is how to get enough light on the background that people can _see_ the things on the shelves and whatnot while also lighting myself enough to stand out without blowing out my pasty complexion.
January 18, 2026 at 5:55 PM
Also, thanks especially for the lighting tips–that's always been the one part of this I don't have a great feel for yet.

I'm currently running two Elgato key lights stuck to my desk–one pointing at me (ish) and the other bouncing off the ceiling, but I need to change that to get rid of the shadows.
January 18, 2026 at 5:55 PM
My plans for the backdrop so far are a black & walnut bookshelf behind the right side of my head (left side of the image) with stuff on it that matches the color palette of the rest of the room (it's a guest room too, so it has to look presentable when I'm not in it) and warm lamps!
January 18, 2026 at 5:55 PM
Thanks @jason.energy – this is all immensely helpful!

I'm planning on investing into this, since I'm finally in a long-term space.

Definitely removing the shelf behind me–it's there temporarily while we move furniture in the other rooms around (we moved every room at once, for better or worse 😅)
January 18, 2026 at 5:55 PM
Clever! I'll have to give that a whirl and see how it goes 🔥
