A reminder that, around the world, public broadcasting is always at risk from governments that seek to control, muzzle, or destroy it.
The pretence that actions like this are about improving the flow of information is offensive to anyone who supports democracy and accountability.

It would have been Mark Colvin's birthday today. I still miss him. Australia is not the same in his absence. The world could do with more journalists, like Mark, who were like real-time historians. I was lucky to call him a mate.

Very very pleased to read this, and to know there are still some fundamental principles that unite the media across the political spectrum.
Scoop: 40 news orgs have signed on to a letter circulated by the WHCA supporting the AP and denouncing Trump's move to block them from official events.

The WHCA has gone through great pains to keep the letter from leaking, but I obtained a copy.

Read it in Status: www.status.news/p/associated...

I like this idea a lot.
Using AI to locate story ideas for working journalists to follow up, rather than to write the actual stories.
In 2023, we launched our Product & AI Studio to explore the use of generative AI in local newsrooms. Over the past year, @chalkbeat.org has used AI to uncover stories hidden in public school board meeting minutes.

In public broadcasting, journalists aim to deliver impartial analysis that is not undermined by personal opinion. But how and where do they draw those lines?
Some thoughts from me:
