“Going solar” tells your neighbors something about you, especially if your panels are visible to them. It also tells you something about yourself, and it turns out that can be an important part of your decision.

New NBER working paper!

Much of the green transition is about asking people to pay up front for a long run of savings (EVs, heat pumps) + social benefits. If folks discount that future flow of savings differently, we should expect very different take-up and meaningful differences in welfare.
