What's the best companion text to Marx's "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte" that situates it historically?

Edouard Glissant, preface to his 1961 play "Monsieur Toussaint":

"For those whose history has been reduced by others to darkness and despair, the recuperation of the near or distant past is imperative.

‘What becomes of gender and sexuality amidst the collapse of the liberal world order?’

In this essay, Dr Abeera Khan from SOAS’s Department of Gender Studies examines our current moment as one after homonationalism, where ‘the sparse and vanishing wages of inclusion lie exposed.’

Thanks for all the follows this week!

Just a reminder to let me know about any new online collections or archives connected to radical, labour or anti-colonial history, from anywhere around the world!

Fresh off a weekend filled with Marxist theory, starting this week by re-reading Stuart Hall’s classic essay ”Rethinking the ’Base and Superstructure’ Metaphor” (1977). Remains a vital read today.

My first @dkmarxsoc.bsky.social conference in the books. Today’s keynote by @brosef-stalin.bsky.social was definitely one of the highlights of the weekend. Learned a lot & got to meet so many great people. I’ll definitely be back!

My favorite companion text so far has been Stuart Hall’s ”Signification, Representation, Ideology: Althusser and the Post-Structuralist Debates” (1985). Definitely worth a read.
Question for Marxists: We're reading Althusser's "Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses" in our reading circle next week. What's one companion text you'd recommend to make sense of Althusser's work on ideology?

The board and membership of the Helsinki University Association of Researchers and Teachers (HUART) has successfully voted for the academic boycott of Israel! This is the first Finnish academic union to commit to the BDS campaign.
September 2, 2025 at 3:44 PM
If you work at University of Helsinki and belong to the HYT/HUART union please take part in the upcoming vote on the academic boycott of Israel. It takes place on September 2nd at 5pm!

When movements call for the boycott of entities clearly complicit in genocide & settler-colonialism, we should do just that: boycott. Participation coupled with symbolic gestures of support is not solidarity. It undermines the cause & legitimates colonial violence.
