A new personal history ‘project’ just searching around for tings I like inc. medieval, Viking, Anglo-Saxon & Far Eastern history. All pics ours unless stated
Dominating the horizon, built on the already tallest hill around, stands the impressively imposing keep of #warkworthcastle not only overlooking the village below, but also the River Coquet linking to the North Sea (rivers & oceans being the motorways & airports of their day). See & be seen 🏰

The Lion Tower at #warkworthcastle - a 1480s statement entrance to a grand hall within the bailey of the castle in addition to the spaces within the keep. Seat of the famously historic Percy family. The Tower incs key heraldry from the Percy’s, the Yorkists, Lucy’s & Herbert’s.

Happy St Crispin’s Day & of course the anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt 610 (is my maths correct??) years ago in 1415. Always remember the best school lesson ever recreating Henry V’s famous victory! Here’s a bit of Shakespeare to celebrate; youtu.be/A-yZNMWFqvM?... pic not mine

It’s far too good a castle for just the one post, so here’s a view from the gate tower looking across the Bailey to the imposingly iconic main keep. There was also a great hall to the left with the remains of The Lion Tower visible. Currently managed by English Heritage

From the south up to the north of England; time for some #castle hunting! Starting with some shots of the impressive 12thC-14thC Warkworth Castle sat in the loop of the River Coquet in #northumberland with it’s imposing keep overlooking Amble Harbour & Warkworth village below 🏰

Happy trafalgar day! Can’t even really begin to imagine the true courage it took for everyone to head out to the high seas all those centuries ago! 🇬🇧 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

A fave exhibit of mine at the British Museum; the Kirkburn Sword. Found in an Iron Age grave in East Yorkshire, this sword included decorations of red glass & is considered one of the finest examples found so far. The story this sword could tell would be truly fascinating

Who did it better? The original find and the wonderful reconstruction of the famous Sutton Hoo helmet. Being greedy I personally would love to see the Anglo-Saxon/Viking/Norman period exhibits extended much, much more in the British Museum.

The mesmerising roofscape spanning the great court of the British Museum is almost as impressive as the exhibits contained within. The modern structure was completed at the start of this millennium, the current building dates back to around mid 19th century.

A slightly grey day in the capital, but always nice to see the splash of red brick from the St Pancras building. Most handsome train building in the world? Maybe?
Built mid 19th century, designed by George Gilbert Scott & now Grade 1 listed.

The final blooms of the year providing the colour for another start to the week ahead. Not my own work, thankful for the volunteers in the village putting the time & effort in!

In a stormy autumn evening after a long hard week sometimes you just need your pub 🍻

Come for the fortunes, stay for the garden. A little oasis in the concrete jungle. Wong Tai Sin Temple is a tourist attraction in the main today, but was/is a functioning Taoist temple first opened in 1921.

The day job has been keeping us out of mischief (history site visits) for a while, but managed to sneak in a morning walk to start the week. Eeking out those final moments of warm sunshine in the cool autumn air while the farmers’ fields sit waiting patiently

There won’t be many more early morning pre-work walks in the sunshine for this year now so enjoying them whilst I can. Wasn’t the only one enjoying it either ☀️

SITE VISIT; took a quick trip to Durham Cathedral which was excellent! Free entry with a very gentle suggested donation. Able to access whilst a service is on going & small dogs on leads are welcome. Resting place of St. Cuthbert & The Venerable Bede. Amazing architecture 🌟
