I still have a recurring dream where I go to grad school application portals to check my application status in PhD programs, some schools still haven’t informed me whether I got in or not. The nerve!

George L. Mosse writing on Max Nordau in 1966. (The person who annotated the book before me seemed to think movies bridged the gap between intellectual culture and popular culture. I don’t disagree, but, a lot of the world is still fascist and/or narrow-minded?!)

I want to read a book about the idiosincrasies and the universals of humor, like how certain things are funny across languages but also how learning to be funny in another language and another context is so hard.
