However we also have new possibilities opened up thanks to (of course) AI. Large language models and fast/cheap fine-tuned classifier models are technologies I'm eager to apply to this problem space.

For example: my doctor communicates with me only via a specialized app their office provides. Same for my health insurance provider and my kid's school.

Email is not offered as an option for any of these, I assume partially for regulatory reasons.

Since I wrote that piece five years ago, I feel the problem has only gotten worse. Not just the amount of information, but the number of different sources that we receive critical information through.

My first area of investigation is something I'm calling a "personal information firehose"

We're all awash in work and personal correspondence through a variety of messaging apps.

I'd like computers to do more to help us know what's important and requires action, and what can be ignored.

True peer-to-peer connections without server intermediation remains elusive for local first. Great to see ongoing research in this area.
@grjte.sh (who explored local-first and ATproto with Groundmist) explored Bitchat using Wi-Fi Aware rather than Bluetooth
7/ Check out the details, including a deeper discussion of challenges, a prototype of Bitchat over Wi-Fi Aware, and general notes on cross-platform Wi-Fi Aware implementation

Kinopio Year-End Investor Report

As you may know, Kinopio is organic software that's completely community funded. But if you're reading this, as far as I’m concerned, you’re invested in the future of Kinopio.

It's a huge amount of work to run a CFP process, but also rewarding. Hope to write a debrief post about how we did it at some point.
It was agonizing to choose from among the 34 excellent submissions, but here are the four talks selected from our CFP process!

I think the DX piece—it just seems more fun to build this way.

I wrote about this including

- the benefits of synced apps for UX and DX
- how it plays with agentic apps and LLM-assisted coding
- the relationship to local first
- why I got involved with Sync Conf
