I once spoke with a retiree with $2M in savings. When she asked her advisor, ‘How do I start drawing income in retirement?’ he replied, ‘Why would you take money out?’

He manages her investments but has no plan for her retirement income—and worse, refused to help create one.

Before retirees buy a big insurance policy, remember, if you're healthy enough to qualify for insurance, you're healthy enough to use the money instead of leaving more behind.

You reach a point in life when saving money isn't your problem, it's spending it.

We simply call this stage retirement.

When @thewallstreet.bsky.social quoted me as saying, "If you die with a lot of money, it means you sacrificed too much and lived too small," commenters bashed the sentiment as reckless.

They're not wrong...

Ending 2024 with a feature in The Wall Street Journal alongside top retirement income researchers David Blanchett and Michael Finke is pretty damn cool.

Thanks, Anne, for including me. I had a blast sharing one of the many reasons retirees struggle to spend the money.

Retirees end up spending less over time, because they're afraid to make inflationary adjustments to their income payments.

Instead, retirees restrict their spending to the confines of the income they receive, reducing their spending in real terms over time.

When selling their business, I see the concept of a Vendor Take-Back loan, which makes many business owners stop and ask, "Why would I let them pay for my business with my money?"

I get it. You own a business, and it produces x free cash flow.

Financial planners tie the HOW to your WHY.

Money decisions can be mentally taxing, even when you've done the research and know your options.

This is where financial planners can help in ways the internet can't.

They explain why, for your situation, one option is better than the rest.
