Using a multi-sector perspective, we distinguish service vs technology value chains to explain how transitions broaden as they accelerate.

One implication: industrial transformation can occur without sustainability transitions—but not the other way around.

Conceptualizing the relationship between industrial transformation and accelerating sustainability transitions: A multi-sectoral perspective
The acceleration of sustainability transitions increasingly hinges on industrial transformation, i.e., structural changes in the sectors that produce,…

How can we understand accelerating system transitions when security of supply, affordability & competitiveness move centre stage?

We argue transitions are increasingly pursued through industrial transformation, involving coordinated change across multiple sectors & interdependent value chains.

Low-carbon electrification is unfolding as a multi-system development block propelled by positive cross-system feedbacks. The speed and direction of electrification in any given place are shaped by the degree of local institutional mismatches (e.g., constetations, regulations, or justice issues).

This perspective above all demonstrates the importance of having a broad electrification strategy that is integrated with industrial and climate policy.

What do you think? How do you make sense of this electrification wave?

How can we make sense of the low-carbon electrification wave transforming economies?

Last week, at the yearly FME NTRANS (Norwegian Centre for Energy Transition Strategies) conference in Oslo, I shared my take.

Great to be part of this!
Thanks again to our presenters, discussants and online participants in last week's workshop on #sector-coupling and #multi-system dynamics in sustainability #transitions. Also, many thanks to SNSF, STRN and ZHAW-INE for their financial support.

How to accelerate sustainability transitions is one of the most important questions of our time. Our new paper led by Benjamin Sovacool and Frank Geels, takes stock of what we know about acceleration as a phenomenon, and points to future research needs. shorturl.at/w93oL
The acceleration of low-carbon transitions: Insights, concepts, challenges, and new directions for research

This year will go down in history as the year the energy sector woke up to AI. This is also the year AI woke up to energy. Is the data center power frenzy just the latest of a long line of energy sect...
