The Herald shifted, staff sinking deep into the snow, creaking faintly under its weight. Its three mouths braided words together, low and resonant, hypnotic in their cadence. "I could tell you," it said, voice threading through the still air, "but I am certain you would agree regardless. You love your mother too much." The words sank into Jayce's chest like knives wrapped in velvet. "Then... tell me," he whispered, breath rising in clouds that mingled with the river's murmur, snowflakes drifting slow and fat around them. "I would ask that you try to love me."
