My biggest takeaway from this course is that we communicate all sorts of things without even realizing that we are doing so! It is also how important it is to communicate mindfully in all areas of your life. #UTcommtheory

My favorite theory was cognitive dissonance theory! I found it interesting to observe this theory in real life. It’s funny to think that we subconsciously know when something isn’t aligning with our values or what we think is the right thing to do! #UTcommtheory

The agenda setting theory is still relevant. Algorithms are controlled & limit what we see. Important info may not get through to us because of past posts that we’ve engaged with. I know that I often see the same kinds of posts & often miss things from friends that I’d like to see #UTcommtheory

With the recent gov shutdown, there was a lot of talk about SNAP benefits. This has brought a lot of attention to food insecurities and people who are struggling to have safe and consistent food on the table without these benefits. #UTcommtheory

I chose Melissa McCarthy because she always brings me humor & comfort. I find her stuff to be easy to watch & it is helpful to relax after a long day of work. Her work is easily accessible. It helps with stress relief & can help fulfill my social & emotional needs without interactions #UTcommtheory

I chose to do Disney because I grew up watching all of the princess movies. I do think the movies gave a false sense of what relationships are like. But also taught me about looking deeper into a person, being brave, and girl power. These movies shape children and give ideals. #UTcommtheory

The meme I made is about blurring personal boundaries. There’s always that couple that posts all the details of all of their arguments on social media but is totally fine and madly in love when it’s over with. #UTcommtheory

AI has made me feel like I have to constantly worry that my work will be flagged. Even recently when I applied to grad programs, I was worried the entire time that the schools would think my statement of purpose was written by AI. #UTcommtheory

I am a people pleaser and often engage in nonassertive communication. I would much rather the people around me have what they want over what I want. So even when I may have an opinion or want/need, I’ll stay quiet and let others pick what they want. #UTcommtheory

When you think someone’s talking to you so you respond but they were actually talking to someone else. So awkward and uncomfortable. #UTcommtheory

I believe that I best respond to participation in the decision making approaches. I enjoy having a say in what is occurring at work and believe that when a team collaborates and negotiates that it is the best way to achieve the desired goals. #UTcommtheory

Education needs a culture shift. Teachers and other school employees are expected to do large amounts of work during the work day and don’t have enough time to get it done. Often times work outside of work hours & have low pay. There should be a better work life balance and higher pay! #UTcommtheory

An example of pathos is the super sad animal abuse commercial where they are playing the sad music and showing all of the abused/sad looking animals. They are asking for donations. But they are playing on our emotions and trying to guilt us into donating. #UTcommtheory

I’ve been trying my best to save money lately, I want to increase my savings account before buying a house. I find myself torn sometimes because I want to be able to do all the fun things with my friends, like going on the vacation, but also need to save. #UTcommtheory

I agree with the media multiplexity theory. I often have multiple conversations going with the people closest to me (messenger, instagram, TikTok, etc.) as we share things back and forth on different platforms. Even with those who aren’t on social media, we use texting and calling. #UTcommtheory

I have had a few friends on Facebook who overshare details of their personal relationships (dating, marriage, parents, etc.). I always end up being a reluctant confidant when it comes across my page or timeline. It is a lot of information that I would rather not know. #UTcommtheory

I think Chandler and Monica from Friends are a good example of inclusion-seclusion. They are trying to balance being a couple and having their alone time while also trying to be apart of the friend group. They often have people in and out of their house while wanting to be alone. #UTcommtheory

I’m choosing similarity for uncertainty reduction. My real life example is that I was placed into a new building at work and didn’t really know anyone. I felt very uncomfortable and nervous until I met a few new people and discovered we have a lot in common #UTcommtheory

I went on a first date once where the guy proceeded to dive into his past relationship. Gave EVERY detail. Then told me he’d always love her and would be seeing her that weekend when he went to one of her immediate family members funeral. #UTcommtheory

I grew up in a consensual or pluralistic family. I feel it was a cross between the two. I was allowed to think, feel or be whatever I wanted to be. We did have the family hierarchy and were told to respect our elders. The expectation was always to attend college and have a good job. #UTcommtheory

I ignored my friends text message for an extended period of time. This is not normal since I text back pretty quickly. She ended up texting me a few more times telling me that she was here for me if I needed anything & loves me. This tells me that she cares about me and our friendship. #UTcommtheory

I feel like my “I” and “Me” have been at odds a lot lately. One example would be that I have been wanting to dress more comfy for work (leggings and sweatshirts) but I know that I have to look more professional so I’ve been wearing jeans all week with leggings on Friday as a reward #UTcommtheory

My favorite of the 7 communication traditions is socio-psychological. It is my favorite because it relates to behavior and communication and interactions between people. There is so much more to communication than what is on the surface and it is so interesting to me. #UTcommtheory

I think explanation of data is the most important! It is important to have the proof to back something up and not be purely opinion based. Without data, we would not be able to know the truth. This can also help to ensure that everyone understands why and how. #UTcommtheory

I’m more drawn to the interpretative approach! I find it to be more interesting because it is about a person’s experiences and how it can relate to why they do the things they do. I feel like it aligns with my interests in human behavior. #UTcommtheory
