Trump isn't imposing tariffs for economic reasons. His ego demands the leaders of other nations submit to him, so this is his club to beat them with.

Isn't it evident to everyone by the sheer magnitude of malfeasance being performed by the Trump administration that the Republicans have no fear of ever being voted out of office? The coup is past the point of no return. The US as it has been for the last 249 years is over. We are now Russia 2.0.
