Basically we used to watch anime with MPC and a few additional plugins like K-Lite Codec Pack and CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack). However development for both ended and MPC stopped being updated once other players like MPV and IINA came in, and then VLC became good enough to be among these two

As an unc weeb I can't believe people use VLC to watch anime. Back in the 2010s VLC was mocked for being a terrible player for anime MKVs.
